TWO BLINKS, I LOVE YOU ALRIGHT

Liverpool’s two blinks, i love you has released his colourfully kinetic new single ‘alright’. The alias of songwriter Liam Brown, two blinks, i love you is a project of sincerity, which endeavours to embrace imperfection. Taken from his forthcoming EP ep 2, ‘alright’ is a propulsive addition which almost didn’t find a place on the new collection. Speaking about the track’s origins, Brown explained: “It started off as a throwaway song in a semi-secret side project I have that I usually use to offload songs I’ve written, but I always kept coming back to it, and as my affinity for more direct guitar music was creeping into the project, I thought it would be only fitting for this song to have a better life.” The track draws inspiration from Brown’s time spent in New York, but presenting a different sound to the other singles released, ‘alright’ shows another side of the scene. However, it arguably has a cross-country feel to it. With driving, jangly surf tones reminiscent of New York City’s The Drums, and the washed-out, grainy though atmospheric textures of California’s Day Wave, it doesn’t in stay in one place. The arrangement grows infectiously, an irresistible concoction of reverb-drenched riffs, high-powered percussion, lo-fi harmonics and dreamlike synths to close. Yet for all of its energy, there’s a heavy melancholy with a hook which comes out like unfinished thoughts, or a conversation partially heard: ‘How many times do I have to say?, How many times can you walk away?, How many times am I alright?’ Certainly inspired, Brown’s own distinct touch shines through, making ‘alright’ an easy favourite from what we’ve heard from ep. 2 so far. -Kayla Sandiford
